Traction Machine

Motor, brake and sheave. Friction between the grooved sheave and the ropes is what actually lifts the car — the machine only has to move the difference the counterweight leaves.

Machine types

Three machine arrangements, and what decides between them.

Travel height, available machine room and headroom decide the arrangement before cost ever enters the conversation.

Geared Geared traction elevator machine with worm gearbox in a machine room

Geared traction machine

A motor drives the sheave through a worm or helical gearbox. The workhorse machine for Indian mid-rise housing — proven, serviceable and stocked everywhere.

Gearbox
Worm or helical
Speed range
0.5 – 1.75 m/s
Machine room
Required
Service
Gear oil schedule
Best for
Lowest equipment cost and parts available from every supplier.
Trade-off
Needs a machine room and periodic gear oil changes.
Gearless Gearless permanent-magnet elevator traction machine and drive sheave

Gearless traction machine

A permanent-magnet motor turns the sheave directly, with no gearbox in between. Quieter and more efficient, and the only sensible answer above about fifteen floors.

Gearbox
None, direct drive
Speed range
1.5 – 6.0 m/s
Machine room
Required
Service
No gear oil
Best for
Highest ride quality and lowest running cost of any machine type.
Trade-off
Higher equipment cost, and drive faults need specialist attention.
MRL Compact gearless traction machine mounted at the shaft head for a machine-room-less elevator

Gearless, MRL-mounted

The same gearless principle, compact enough to bolt directly onto the guide rail at the shaft head, removing the machine room entirely.

Gearbox
None, direct drive
Speed range
1.0 – 1.75 m/s
Machine room
None
Service
Access from car top
Best for
Removes the machine room and its roof penetration entirely.
Trade-off
Rail section and fixing have to be specified to carry the drive load.

What it does

It turns the sheave. The counterweight does the rest.

Because the counterweight carries the car plus roughly half the rated load, the machine only moves the imbalance. That is why a lift carrying twenty people needs a far smaller motor than the arithmetic suggests.

Specification

What we supply.

Starts per hour is the figure that most often gets understated at ordering, and it is the one that determines whether a machine lasts. Freight and hospital duty need it stated honestly.

Elevator traction machine, brake and drive sheave in a machine room
The brake is the part that matters A traction machine rarely fails outright. Brake lining wear and gap drift are what actually take lifts out of service, and both are inspectable.
Machine types Geared and gearless
Rated load 272 – 2040kg
Speed range 0.5 – 2.5m/s
Starts per hour up to 180starts
Brake Electromagnetic, dual circuit
Sheave Machined, grooved
Supply 415 V, 3-phase

When to replace

What a tired machine sounds and feels like.

Traction machines give plenty of warning. Almost every symptom below is cheaper to address than to ignore.

Brake

Delayed or noisy brake release

Lining wear or gap drift. This is the most common machine-side fault and it is adjustable.

Gearbox

Whine or oil leak from the gearbox

Worm gear wear. Oil condition tells you how much life is left before it becomes a replacement.

Sheave

Rope slip or uneven groove wear

Groove profile has worn. It causes rope wear to accelerate, so it is worth catching early.

Levelling

Stopping accuracy drifting

Often brake or encoder rather than the controller. Worth checking the machine before replacing electronics.

Ordering

What we need to quote this part.

Photographs of the nameplate save days. Most delays come from identifying the wrong variant, not from supply.

  • Machine nameplate photograph. Make, model, serial number and rating plate.
  • Rated load, speed and roping. Including whether the lift is 1:1 or 2:1 roped.
  • Starts per hour. The real figure over a full shift, not a daily average.
  • Machine room dimensions. Access route and available space, since machines are heavy and awkward to place.

Common questions

Before you order

What is the lift motor or traction machine price?

Traction machine price is set mainly by rated load, speed and whether it is geared or gearless — a gearless machine costs more than a geared one of the same capacity, offset by lower running cost. Hoist rope wire and counterweight are priced separately if only the ropes need renewing rather than the machine itself. Send the nameplate photograph and duty figures for an exact quote.

Should we repair or replace a traction machine?

Brakes, bearings and sheaves are all serviceable. A worn gearbox is usually the point where replacement, or a move to gearless, becomes the better spend.

Can we convert from geared to gearless?

Sometimes, subject to machine room space, beam capacity and rope arrangement. It brings a quieter ride and lower running cost.

How long does a traction machine last?

Well past twenty years with proper lubrication and brake maintenance. It usually outlives two controllers.

Do you supply machines for other makes?

Yes. Send the nameplate photograph, roping arrangement and duty figures and we will confirm what fits.

Also supplied

Other components we stock and fit.

Supplied for lifts we maintain and for lifts we do not.

Control Panels

VVVF drives and controllers. The part that most often decides whether an old lift is worth keeping.

Open

COP & LOP Panels

Car and landing fixtures, including braille and lower-reach accessible sets.

Open

Elevator Doors

Automatic, collapsible and vertical bi-parting door sets with their operators.

Open

Elevator Cabin

Car interiors in stainless, glass, stone and timber, with lighting and flooring.

Open

Guide Rails

Machined T-section rails and brackets. Ride quality is mostly a rail alignment problem.

Open

Safety Devices

Governors, safety gear, buffers and interlocks — the parts that are never optional.

Open

Traction Machine

Geared and gearless machines with brakes, rated against starts per hour.

Open

Machine getting noisy or leaking oil?

Send the nameplate photograph and a description. We will tell you whether it is serviceable or whether replacement is the honest answer.
