Duty planning

How a freight elevator gets sized.

A freight lift that is under-specified does not fail dramatically. It overheats, slows down and starts costing production time, which is harder to diagnose and more expensive.

State the duty cycle honestly

Starts per hour over a full shift, not an average across the day. Motor and brake selection depend entirely on this figure.

Declare the loading class

Hand loaded, pallet-truck loaded, or forklift driven onto the platform. Each one is a different structural design.

Size the doors to the widest load

Vertical bi-parting doors give the widest clear opening for a given shaft, which is why they dominate freight work.

Check the power supply and starting current

High starts per hour on a large motor puts real demand on the incoming supply. This gets checked with the electrical contractor at survey.

Plan for the lift being out of service

On a production line, a single freight lift is a single point of failure. Either specify two, or agree a spares holding and response time in the contract.

Design the maintenance window

A continuous-duty lift still needs servicing. Agreeing when that can happen is part of the specification, not an afterthought.

What does a freight elevator cost, and who supplies them in India?

Freight elevator price in India is set chiefly by rated load, starts per hour and loading class — a hand-loaded Class A platform costs well below a forklift-rated Class C one. As a freight elevator supplier we quote against the declared duty cycle rather than a standard catalogue figure, because under-specifying against real starts per hour is the most expensive mistake on this equipment.

What is the difference between a goods lift and a freight elevator?

Duty. A goods lift moves stock intermittently. A freight elevator runs a high, sustained cycle and every component is rated for it. Using a goods lift on freight duty is the most common cause of premature failure we see.

Can a forklift drive onto the platform?

Yes, with a Class C design: reinforced platform, heavier guide rails and a drive selected for the impact loads. It must be specified before design, not requested afterwards.

How many starts per hour can a freight elevator take?

Typically 90 to 180, depending on motor rating, drive type and cooling. Tell us the real figure — understating it to save cost is a false economy.

What door type should we use?

Vertical bi-parting, power-operated, in almost all cases. They give the widest clear opening for the shaft and cope with industrial handling better than side-sliding doors.

How quickly can you respond to a breakdown?

For freight installations we agree the response window and the spares holding in the AMC contract, because a generic response time is not useful when a line is stopped.
