Escalators

A lift moves people in batches. An escalator moves them continuously, which is why it wins wherever a crowd arrives all at once — retail floors, station concourses, exhibition halls.

Arrangements

Four layouts, and one relative that is not a staircase at all.

The arrangement is a circulation decision, not an equipment one. It gets fixed at architectural stage, because it determines every floor opening above the ground level.

Parallel

Up and down units sit side by side on the same axis, each floor stacked directly above the last. The clearest arrangement to read from the floor.

The flight follows a curve rather than a straight line. Made by very few manufacturers worldwide and specified when the escalator is meant to be an architectural centrepiece.

Moving walkway (travelator)

A flat or gently inclined belt instead of steps. Inclined versions accept shopping trolleys and baggage carts, which is why they appear in hypermarkets and airports.

An escalator is judged on grit and step-track cleaning as much as on the truss that carries it, and most of the breakdowns we attend trace back to maintenance discipline rather than equipment failure. We have craned trusses into malls, transit-adjacent commercial buildings and exhibition halls across the NCR, testing comb switches, chain tension and handrail guards on a schedule rather than a checklist ticked from memory. For buildings where a stopped escalator is a crowd problem, that is the standard we run every service visit to.

Safety

What stops an escalator, and in what order.

Escalator safety is a chain of independent trips. Any one of them removes power and sets the brake. These are the devices we test at every service visit.

Comb plate impact switch

If anything jams between the comb teeth and the step, the comb plate moves and the unit stops before the obstruction is dragged under.

Step sag and step-level switch

Detects a step that has dropped out of line. This trips before the damaged step can reach the comb plate.

Handrail entry guard

A soft guard at the point where the handrail re-enters the balustrade, with a switch behind it. The most common injury point on any escalator.

Broken step chain detector

Watches the tension carriage. Chain elongation or breakage trips the unit and the brake holds the incline.

Overspeed and reversal monitor

If the unit exceeds rated speed or an up-running escalator starts drifting down under load, power is cut immediately.

Emergency stop buttons

One at each landing, within reach of the public. They stop the unit but do not restart it — a restart requires a keyed reset by a technician.

Buildings where an escalator beats a lift.

  • Shopping malls and retail. Continuous flow between trading floors, with crisscross layouts routing shoppers past shopfronts.
  • Metro and railway stations. Crowd surges arriving as a full train empties. Usually multi-parallel with heavy-duty public-service specification.
  • Airports and transit terminals. Escalators for level change, paired with moving walkways for long horizontal runs.
  • Showrooms and exhibition halls. Visitor circulation across two or three display floors where a lift queue would break the experience.
  • Large offices and institutions. Lobby-to-mezzanine movement, taking the short-hop traffic off the passenger lift group.

Common questions

Before you ask for a quotation

How much space does an escalator need?

A 30° escalator needs roughly 1.73 m of horizontal run for every 1 m of rise, plus about 2.5 m of landing plate at each end. For a typical 4 m floor-to-floor rise that is close to 12 m of total length. The structural opening has to be agreed before the slab is cast.

Can an escalator be installed in an existing building?

Yes, but it is a structural project, not an equipment one. The truss is craned in as a single piece, so access route and floor opening are the real constraints. We survey both before quoting.

What is the difference between a commercial and a public-service escalator?

Public-service units, for metro and airport duty, are built to a heavier standard: stronger step chains, larger drives and continuous-duty ratings. A commercial unit in that duty will wear out early.

How often does an escalator need servicing?

Monthly as a minimum for retail duty, and more often in dusty or high-footfall locations. Step track cleaning and chain tension checks are the two items that most affect life.

Do you supply moving walkways as well?

Yes. Inclined travelators for trolley traffic and horizontal units for long concourses are quoted from the same survey.
