Signs Your Elevator Needs Repair — Before It Breaks Down

Every breakdown we get called out for had warning signs first, usually for weeks. Here's what to watch for before yours does too.

Signs Your Elevator Needs Repair — Before It Breaks Down

Here's something we notice on almost every repair call: the elevator had warning signs beforehand, usually for weeks, sometimes for months. The building just didn't read them as warnings at the time, or someone noticed but assumed it wasn't serious enough to mention. So let's walk through what actually counts as a sign, so you can catch things before they turn into a full breakdown.

The signs that matter

Unusual noise. A grinding sound during travel, a new clicking on start or stop, a rattle that wasn't there last month. Any of these is a component telling you it's wearing out, and it's worth listening rather than hoping it goes away on its own.

Door misalignment. If doors are sticking, closing unevenly, or taking an extra second to seal properly, that usually points to a worn track or a sensor that's drifted out of calibration. It rarely fixes itself, and it tends to get worse gradually until one day the door just won't close at all.

Jerky movement. A smooth start and a smooth stop is what you should expect as the baseline. Anything jerkier than that, especially if it's new, usually traces back to the drive system or the controller, and it's worth flagging even if it seems minor at first.

Frequent stalling. If a lift stops between floors, even briefly, even just once, don't wait this one out. This is exactly the kind of fault that turns into a trapped-passenger call if it's ignored, and it's one of the few signs that genuinely can't wait for a scheduled visit.

Levelling drift. If the cabin keeps landing slightly above or below floor level, that's the positioning system telling you it needs attention before it gets worse. It's a small trip hazard now, and a bigger mechanical problem later.

Why building managers so often miss these

Usually it's not carelessness, it's familiarity. If you use the same lift every day, small changes creep in so gradually that they stop registering as changes at all. This is exactly why a fresh set of ears, like a technician who only sees the lift once a month, often catches something a daily user has stopped noticing entirely. It's worth actively asking residents whether anything feels different lately, rather than assuming silence means everything's fine.

Repair vs a full AMC visit

Here's the distinction that trips people up: a scheduled AMC visit is preventive. It's not designed to diagnose an active fault the way a repair call-out is. So if you're seeing any of the signs above right now, that's a repair call, not something to jot down and leave for the next scheduled visit weeks away.

See our repair page for how we triage and respond to these calls, and if the lift's already stopped and you need to know what to do right now, our companion piece on what to do during an active breakdown covers exactly that, step by step.

When in doubt, call anyway

If you're genuinely unsure whether what you're noticing counts as a real sign or just normal ageing, call anyway. A quick diagnostic visit costs far less than the alternative, whether that's a bigger repair bill later or, worse, an actual breakdown with someone inside. Nobody's ever been annoyed at us for confirming a lift is fine.

Training residents to actually report what they notice

A lot of buildings have a working complaint system on paper that nobody actually uses, because residents assume small oddities aren't worth reporting or don't know who to tell. A simple, well-publicised way to flag something, even just a WhatsApp number pinned in the lift lobby, dramatically increases how early these signs actually reach someone who can act on them, rather than staying as a passing comment in a resident's head.
